We use locks and other security measures to keep intruders out of our homes, but we have to be careful that we don’t trap ourselves inside.
If there is a fire in your house, you and your loved ones need to be able to get out quickly and safely.
TFS recommends that:
- Windows and locks must be easy to open from the inside to allow a quick escape.
- Make sure everyone can use security-barred doors and windows or discuss with family members other ways out of the house.
- The best option is to install deadlocks that can be opened from the inside without keys.
- When you’re home, don’t deadlock your doors unless the key is left in the lock.
- Limit the number of keys needed to open deadlocks.

Remember, if there is a fire it will be dark and smokey and keys will be hard to find.
Hot tips
- Smoke alarms provide an early warning of a fire to give you time to escape safely. But only working smoke alarms save lives. Have one in every hallway, living area, garage, on every storey, and where anyone sleeps.
- Develop a home fire escape plan for your home and talk about it with everybody in the house. Practise it at least twice a year.
- For people in rental properties, it is important to talk to your landlord before making changes to locks.
